Art

Intent

At Caldecote, we value Art and Design as an important part of our children's entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum.

We see creativity as an essential part of our curriculum provision, giving our children and staff an opportunity to express themselves and flourish.

It is essential that Art and Design is accessible to all, it is a great opportunity to collaborate  and share ideas, processes and outcomes.

At Caldecote, we have based our Art and Design Curriculum around the National Curriculum and through the use of Curriculum Maestro to deliver an exciting, rich and forward thinking visual arts education.

Through our Art and Design Curriculum, we aim to:

  • Provide opportunities for creative work, exploring ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Allow children to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.
  • Evaluate creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
  • To engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.
  • As children progress through the school, they should begin to think critically and develop a more developed understanding of art and design.

Implementation

The Art and Design curriculum at Caldecote features a broad range of skills, knowledge and explorations that are designed to expose our children to a diverse range of artists, crafts people and designers.

We use different media and drawing surfaces to experiment and apply their knowledge and skill.  We provide a curriculum where children are encouraged to take ownership of their own learning and articulate their understanding through discussion and evaluation.

We want to ensure that children value creativity and think creatively and critically about the purposes of Art and Design.

At Caldecote the Art and Design Curriculum is created to be inclusive and fully accessible for all children. Adaptations are made where required to ensure that SEND children can flourish as artists and show their creativity.

Impact

The most important impact of our Art and Design curriculum is that our children feel the confidence to be creative.

We also want our children to have developed an enjoyment for Art and Design and that they have been able to increase their expertise when using different equipment and techniques across a range of media.

It is expected that most children will have met the end of Key Stage National Curriculum expectations by the end of each Key Stage.

The impact of our curriculum will be measured in the following ways:

  • Through the use of end of unit expectations for children to self assess against and for staff to use to determine progress and next steps for teaching and learning.
  • Through review of the quality of teaching, including learning walks and monitoring.
  • Through reviewing planning documentation and looking at the standards achieved by the children.
  • Through pupil voice, exploring what our children enjoy, remember and feel about their experiences in Art and Design.
  • By reviewing children's work, through both book scrutiny and by visiting children in class to share their learning journey.
  • Through displays of children's work around the school and in classrooms.
