Computing

At Caldecote CE Academy, we wish to develop a love of computing and provide children with the ability to enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding through different types of media whilst keeping safety at the forefront of their minds.

Intent

At Caldecote, we understand the importance of integrating online safety into our curriculum so that it is covered frequently throughout the school. Each year group teaches the importance of using technology safely and appropriately. We aim to ensure that every effort is made to safeguard our children and prepare them for the evolving digital world that we now live in.

We offer a structured sequence of lessons, through Purple Mash, to ensure that they have covered the skills required to  meet the aims of the National Curriculum. The content allows for a broad, deep understanding of computing and how it links to children's lives. It offers a range of opportunities for consolidation, challenge and variety. This allows children to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. They develop problem-solving skills and learn to evaluate and apply information technology. It also enables them to become responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information technology

Implementation

Computing has strong links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems. It is our intention to enable children to find, explore, exchange and present information.

Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology –as active participants in a digital world.

Each lesson contains revision, analysis and problem-solving. Through the sequence of lessons, we intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of the digital world, see its place in their future and develop confidence.

Cross-curricular links are also important in supporting other areas of learning. The lessons and resources help children to build on prior knowledge at the same time as introducing new skills and challenges.

In KS1, the focus is on developing the use of algorithms, programming and how technology can be used safely and purposefully. In KS2, lessons still focus on algorithms, programming and coding but in a more complex way and for different purposes.

Impact

Children will have a secure knowledge of the implications of technology and using the internet safely. This is important in a society where technologies and trends are rapidly evolving.

Children will use digital and technological vocabulary accurately, alongside a progression in their technical skills.

Children will see the digital world as part of their world, extending beyond school, and understand that they have choices to make. They will be confident and respectful digital citizens going on to lead happy and healthy digital lives.

Children will be equipped, not only with the skills and knowledge to use technology effectively and for their own benefit, but more importantly – safely.  The biggest impact we want on our children is that they understand the consequences of using the internet and that they are also aware of how to keep themselves safe online.

As children become more confident in their abilities in Computing, they will become more independent and develop key life skills such as problem-solving, logical thinking and self-evaluation become second nature.
